Human-centered Competencies are Key in an AI-Driven Future

To thrive in the digital era, organizations must adapt their leadership development strategies to align with digital transformation. While Artificial Intelligence (AI) and technology are powerful tools, leadership may require a human-centric approach. According to a Workday study, organizations must focus on developing human skills and embrace human-centric leadership to reap the benefits of AI. Studies also revealed that 83% of respondents globally believe that the growing use of AI will make human skills more vital, highlighting that “soft” skills aren’t so soft anymore.

As workforce dynamics shift, prioritizing soft skills training is essential to empower employees, navigate uncertainties, and drive sustainable results. Here are three critical competencies we’ve identified that are needed to succeed in a tech-forward future:

  • Leader as Coach
Leaders must go beyond traditional management and act as coaches, empowering employees to think strategically, solve problems, and collaborate effectively. To foster critical thinking skills and build resilience, leaders must help their teams navigate challenges by asking powerful questions and providing mentorship. This role becomes even more crucial as the next generation enters the workforce, having relied heavily on AI and technology to problem solve. They will need intentional coaching from leaders to strengthen their critical thinking skills and develop independent problem-solving abilities.
  • Emotional Intelligence
According to HBR, self-awareness, empathy, and adaptability will be critical in an AI-driven world.  We have seen that leaders with high emotional intelligence can build strong relationships, manage diverse teams, and foster an inclusive workplace culture. Unlike AI, leaders can offer emotional support, build trust, and maintain motivation within their teams—key elements for engagement and performance.

  • Effective Communication
Leaders must articulate a compelling vision, provide reassurance, and foster collaboration in ways that AI cannot. Mastering the art of storytelling, active listening, and persuasive communication enables leaders to inspire and align their teams, especially in times of change and uncertainty. Workday’s study also reveals that 76% of respondents believe that employees will crave more human connections as AI usage grows. Strong communication also helps form meaningful connections.
