Navigating Change

Miles & Stockbridge, PC, a mid-Atlantic law firm based in Baltimore, MD, recognized the need to prepare the firm for the future in light of changes in the law sector and the eventual retirement of a senior partner who had provided leadership for many years. The firm sought a partner to help them build not only a vision for the firm’s future and strategic plan, but also to help develop the next generation of leaders who could implement that transformative vision.

Approach
Nebo worked with Chairman and CEO John Frisch and others at Miles & Stockbridge to define a process for creating a strategic vision, developing an action plan to deliver on the vision, and provide coaching and leadership development for more than 25 lawyers and functional leaders.

Envisioning the Future and Creating a Strategic Plan
The Nebo Company partnered with a law firm industry expert to facilitate a proven process for articulating a compelling vision and strategic plan. Utilizing Nebo’s three-step vision process, the firm defined a differentiating strategy and aligned the organization to implement it.

Refreshing and Integrating Core Values
Once the strategic plan was enacted, Nebo led a series of firm-wide workshops inviting input into the values that truly distinguish Miles & Stockbridge.  The firm has updated its core values as a result of this work and has engaged the entire organization in defining how to bring the values to life daily.

Developing Leaders to Implement the Strategy
Once the strategic plan was developed, Nebo provided customized leadership training and executive coaching for 25+ lawyers and functional leaders to establish a common vocabulary, skillset and mindset that would enable successful implementation of the strategy and vision. Each leader was matched with a leadership coach to support individual development as they applied the concepts to their work at the firm.

Translating Strategy into Culture Change
In partnership with the firm’s leaders, Nebo designed and facilitated a firm-wide summit to roll-out the major change element of the firm’s strategy: a distinctive client experience. Nebo then delivered a custom workshop across the business to develop the mindset and skills needed for the firm to consistently “Go the Extra Mile,” part of a mission developed during the strategic planning and values work.

Impact
Through partnership with Nebo, Miles & Stockbridge established a growing sense of community, stewardship and confidence amongst the next generation of firm leaders, one that is rooted in the firm’s values and ensures that the firm is prepared to work together effectively to lead the next chapter of history at Miles & Stockbridge.
